The newly crowned king of the Welterweight division Tyron Woodley has wasted no time in generating a bit of controversy for himself as he sits atop the 170lb division. First his rejection of Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and his aspirations for a title shot, turning down the offer in favour of pursuing what he called “big money fights”. Then followed the commotion caused by him leaking what were supposed-text messages between him and former-champ Georges St. Pierre, verbally agreeing to have a fight whenever it was that GSP was due to arrive back.
Now, after the GSP-fight seems unlikely and Wonderboy is the one who will get his title shot after all, the attention of the ‘Chosen One' has turned to the biggest draw in the sport, Conor McGregor. After McGregor made the point of calling Woodley a ‘bum', Tyron has now returned the favour, calling out the Irishman and giving us an idea of how he feels a bout between the two would go. Speaking on his “Morning Wood with Deez Nuts” Podcast, the 170lb-champ has this to say.
“This goes out to Conor…you need to watch your mouth bro. Because I don’t do nothing but give you cred. I said something about how your hands look sharp, how you’re a tough fighter, you got a big mindset. Where I’m from you don’t call people bums.”
Conor is due to take on Nate Diaz this weekend, a bout contested at Welterweight, but seeing as McGregor is the Featherweight champion and Nate Diaz is more commonly a Lightweight, Tyron Woodley does not see the jump in weight as anything more than a label.
“You’re fighting in my weight, and you’re not in my weight. You’re fighting a lightweight in welterweight, and you might want to watch that brother. Because, I don’t think you want them problems. I’m not Nate. I’m somebody that’s going to hit you, and you’re gonna wake up the next day thinking about retiring.”
If McGregor and Woodley ever got the chance to go for a few rounds, do you think the outcome would be anything like the way Woodley sees it?
