It looks like UFC Fight Night Fortaleza has a potential new match up. Rumours of a light heavyweight bout featuring Brazilian MMA legend Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and New York native Gian Villante have been confirmed by multiple sources according to Ariel Helwani of UFC Fight Night 107 will take place on March 11, 2017 in Fortaleza, Brazil.

Villante is a product of the famous Serra-Longo fight team. He is coming off of a fight of the night victory against Saparbek Safarov at UFC Fight Night 102 in Albany, New York. Villante is known for having a fan friendly style and often engages in stand up wars. Villante has alternated wins and losses over his last four bouts. He is currently ranked 13th and a victory over 9th ranked Rua is likely to see him enter the top ten.

Rua was a member of the legendary Chute Box Academy. He won the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix before moving to the UFC. He captured the UFC light heavyweight championship in 2010, only to lose the belt in his first title defence. Shogun is currently riding a two fight win streak. He has had controversial decision victories over Corey Anderson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in his most recent two bouts. This is Rua's longest winning streak since 2009. Rua will be desperate for a win on home soil to climb back up the rankings and become a potential title contender again.

UFC Fight Night 107 is beginning to shape up nicely. The card is headlined by a bout featuring Kelvin Gastelum against Vitor Belfort. The card currently looks like this:

  • Kelvin Gastelum vs Vitor Belfort
  • Edson Barboza vs Beneil Dariush
